Brett first came to yoga because he wanted regular physical exercise. He is on sabbatical from teaching high school science and is writing an historical novel set in 700 – 200 BC China, the “Warring States” era. He had been running for years as his exercise, and when he offered that fact up to his first Bikram yoga teacher—Therese, who also happens to be a massage therapist—she told him, “I make a living off runners. It wrecks havoc on the knee and hip joints. I’m sure the endorphin high is cool, but the body certainly pays a price.”
Brett took up yoga, challenged by a lack of flexibility, but he more than compensated with great focus and well-intentioned form and placement. The feared “monotony” of doing the same 26 postures each class gave way to relaxation that the regularity of the practice provides…..”a sort of calm, familiar feeling which allowed me to explore other aspects, such as the mind-body-spirit relationship. I think the most valuable part of yoga for me is learning to be relaxed and engaged, to be relaxed and perform well.”
The gained yoga focus has helped Brett with his writing via the structure of the series. He still run a bit—he recently ran “Bay to Breakers.” He likes the “Zen” aspect of running, but appreciates the long, rich history of yoga, as well as the social aspect of a group practice.
Always glad to have your energy in our shared practice, Brett!
