Susan Halet

December, 2002

I came to Bikram’s because of the heat,” Susan Halet professes. Perhaps having just moved from the cold north of Toronto, Canada, exercising in a hot room appealed to her. Or perhaps the heat held promises of helping to heal her chronically aching shoulder—one that acupuncturists, chiropractors, and physical therapist couldn’t.

Whatever appeal the heat held for her, Susan is thankful for having found Bikram’s Yoga. For one thing, Susan’s shoulder has indeed healed. “My shoulder had caused me pain for ten years,” Susan reports. “It was so bad, it would keep me up at nights. But now I’m not in pain anymore, thanks to Bikram’s.

Thanks also to Bikram’s, Susan has found a different and somewhat unexpected warmth. “I came to Bikram’s because of the heat, but I stayed because of the supportive environment,” she explains. “It feels like a real community here.” Susan has developed friendships and a sense of belonging that have helped her to feel happy and settled so far away from home.

During her first year, Susan practiced only once or twice a week. Committing herself to a more frequent practice a year ago, Susan has been coming five to six times a week. “Increasing my practice has taken it to a whole new level.” Susan claims she has worked through several physical problems besides her shoulder—some, she believes, that were manifested in her shoulder. She also has gained emotionally and spiritually. “I have a more balanced view of life,” she reports. “I feel more thoughtful and open-minded.”

It’s been a pleasure having Susan join our yoga community. It’s been amazing seeing the progress she’s made with her increased commitment, and it’s been a comfort having the warmth that she has brought to use with her presence.
