Victor Montoya

January 2003

Not even overseas travel keeps Victor from his regular yoga practice. While in Japan this past summer, for a month’s spectating soccer’s World Cup, Victor practiced 4 times a week in Bikram’s brother, Buddha Choudury’s Tokyo studio. “It was different, the place was tiny and people came in and practiced by themselves, an instructor would watch and say, “You should do that pose again. It was a bit like the silent class in Burlingame, you know which postures need more work because you feel the weaknesses and shortcomings. When I started practicing my forehead was 4 inches away from my knees in Rabbit, and I saw people doing Bow Pulling Pose and thought, I’ll never be able to do that….but, now I can do those poses.”

Beyond being a soccer fan, Victor coaches Girl’s Soccer at the high school level. While coaching 11-year old girls, Victor was dismayed over their lack of flexibility and so introduced yoga to their training. Within a short period of time he was hearing, “hey coach, I can touch my toes!” And girls, Victor’s forehead touches his knees in Rabbit. So take that to the next World’s Cup!
