Yes We Can
It seems that every year December comes unexpectedly “screaming around the corner” along with the overwhelming pressures and demands of the holidays. This December is probably no exception. In fact, this December might feel more overwhelming than ever, given the uncertainty of our current economy. It is, however, precisely during times of uncertainty that we yogis fully realize the importance of tapping into our inner resources and finding an internal stability quite independent of any external instability.
There are many tools a yogi can use to help access that stability. One way is to find an affirmation that keeps thoughts elevated and moving forward in a positive direction. Luckily for us, during the recent presidential campaign, we were given the very powerful affirmation of “Yes We Can.” Adopting and applying this affirmation to our own lives—especially during stressful, uncertain times—is extremely beneficial. Please read on to understand more about the application of our theme of the month, “Yes We Can:”
“Yes We Can” (or, used in the singular, “Yes I Can”) is a very simple yet very powerful affirmation. By repeating it or chanting it in your head—especially during times when it is tempting to be doubtful or worried—you will begin to recognize that there is another way to look at a situation, even if the situation looks bleak. By focusing on the positive, “Yes” and acknowledging our abilities “We (or I) Can,” you actually begin to open up your mind to possibilities and, therefore, creative solutions that would automatically be blocked by focusing on the negative.
This month, at Being Yoga, we encourage you to become aware of the negative thoughts that pop into your head. Once you become aware of them, start consciously replacing them with the positive of “Yes We (or I) Can.” By doing so, you will not only be amazed at the positive transformation you will feel (focusing on the positive actually helps to calm and relax the body), but you will also be amazed at the many opportunities that will open up to you.
So, instead of telling yourself, “The holidays are a drag,” start telling yourself, “Yes I Can enjoy the holidays,” “Instead of thinking, “I don’t have time,” start thinking, “Yes I Can find the time I need to accomplish everything I’d like,” Instead of convincing yourself that “I am always stressed-out during the holidays,” convince yourself that, “Yes I Can stay calm and actually enjoy times of high demand.” Instead of insisting, “I don’t have the resources,” insist that “Yes I Can be creative and make due with what I’ve got.”
Very importantly, tell yourself “Yes I Can make time for my yoga and meditation practice,” because, by doing so, you will continue to reduce stress levels, stay healthy and buoy up your determination to stay positive. Yes You Can accomplish all your goals for the holidays in a peaceful and enjoyable way.
